$100,000 Prize to be Awarded to Best Water/Energy Conservation Idea
Entrepreneurs from around the globe are encouraged to participate in a water/energy conservation competition that stands to benefit everybody, not just those who get a share of the $100,000 purse.
Now in its second year, “The Water-Energy Nexus” invites young start-up companies to submit plans for ideas to make the supply and use of water more efficient. The contest is presented by the nonprofit company Imagine H20.
“Opportunities for saving energy exist at every stage of the water cycle,” said Director of Operations Scott Bryan. “Many of these innovations could be attractive to all water users from utilities down to the individual consumer.”
In addition to cash prizes, the competition’s top finishers will have the opportunity to take part in Imagine H20’s Incubator Program, a valuable tool designed to help entrepreneurs bring their plans to market, make contacts and get established.
“This prize highlights a big market opportunity for entrepreneurs,” said IM20 Chairman Tamin Pechet. “Tomorrow’s water supply system will have to be an energy-efficient one.”
IH20 is holding a series of workshops and international Webcasts that will help prepare entrepreneurs for the competition.
Last year’s big winner was Fruition Sciences, an English- and French-based company that helps vineyard farmers monitor how much water their vines are using. The other top finishers were WaterSmart Software and Rainwater Hog.
Entries are being accepted through Nov. 15. The finalists will be announced in December, and the winning plans will be unveiled in March.
IH20 offers the contest along with its founding sponsor, Royal Bank of Canada, and sponsors Cooley LLP, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Wells Fargo and Full Circle Fund. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is a competition partner.
