Weather-Based Irrigation Controller Specification Updated for Consistency and Clarity

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated its WaterSense® Specification for Weather-Based Irrigation Controllers (WBICs). Version 1.1 of the specification includes minor revisions that reference a test method in the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/ American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Standard S627 Weather-Based Landscape Irrigation Control Systems-2020. The ANSI/ASABE method was designed to replicate the test method included in Version 1.0 of the specification published in 2011, and this change ensures harmonization with respect to the performance test.

Version 1.1 also incorporates clarifications WaterSense made to the specification since its original publication, as well as updated language to provide consistency with the WaterSense Specification for Soil Moisture-Based Irrigation Controllers, which was released in February 2021.

Because this is a minor revision, it will not affect the certification status of any currently WaterSense labeled WBICs. The updates in Version 1.1 ensure that irrigation controllers that earn the WaterSense label will continue to meet EPA's criteria for efficiency and performance. For more information or to view a copy of the revised specification, please visit the WaterSense website.

If you have any questions regarding the revised specification or the WaterSense program in general, please contact the WaterSense Helpline at 866-WTR-SENS (987-7367) or watersense@epa.gov.
