Retrofit Resale Bill Passes in Burbank, CA
An ordinance requiring all homes to be retrofitted with water-saving fixtures upon resale has passed in Burbank, CA, reports the Burbank Leader.
Under the new ordinance, homes sold in the city will require toilets, urinals, showers and faucets to meet the California Plumbing Code prior to close of escrow.
Sellers will be responsible for the cost of the installations, but a cap of one tenth of one percent of the selling price has been included in the ordinance. Both the buyer and the seller must certify compliance – the real estate agent or broker is not responsible.
The ordinance is meant to help the city reach the states goals to conserve water. Through voluntary measures and rebate incentives, Burbank utility customers have managed to reduce their water use by 10 percent.
"I think the residents of Burbank have really stepped up to the plate as far as conservation efforts go," said Councilman Dave Golonski. "We've tried to attack this problem at every angle and make it easy for them to conserve."
