The paper took a look at the number of buildings apply for LEED certification, and noticed a significant drop off. In 2009, there were 10,498 projects that registered for LEED certification – so far this year there have only been 3,071.
The overall drop is being blamed on the drop in commercial construction – according to McGraw-Hill Construction, during the first six months of 2010, nonresidential building was down 15% from the same period a year ago.
Justin Swanson, a LEED-certified project manager with Frank L. Blum Construction, said his firm has seen the same level of activity, but a reduction in the extent clients are willing to invest.
"We've got one going where they were going to do a 'gray water system' (to treat and recycle waste water),"Swanson said, "but looked at the upfront costs and elected not to."
