ASHRAE President Recipient of HPBCCC Award
Gordon Holness, president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), was named the inaugural recipient of the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition (HPBCCC) Award.
The award recognizes Holness for his leadership and work in the area of high-performance buildings as well as for ASHRAE's establishment and continued support of the Coalition.
The award was presented by U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) during High Performance Building Week (June 13-19) at a reception co-sponsored by IAPMO. As a key member of the HPBCCC Executive Committee, IAPMO was very supportive of Holness when his nomination came before the committee.
"President Holness has been a stalwart advocate for improving the performance of our country's buildings," said Dain Hansen, IAPMO director of government relations. "For his efforts, and as colleague of ASHRAE on the High Performance Building Congressional Caucus Coalition, IAPMO applauds President Holness' recognition and we look forward to working with him and ASHRAE on many building initiatives in the future."
As ASHRAE president for 2009-10, Holness selected his presidential theme, "Sustaining Our Future by Rebuilding Our Past," to address energy efficiency in existing buildings. Holness also helped advance sustainability through his service on the Advanced Energy Design Guide Steering Committee and the ASHRAE Headquarters Building Renovation Committee.
"Not only does IAPMO work with ASHRAE on the HPBCCC, but we also enjoy working collaboratively with ASHRAE on drafting legislative proposals to Capitol Hill and working with members of congress in support of sound codes," said Dave Viola, IAPMO director of Special Services. "In addition to all the great work we have undertaken with ASHRAE in Washington, D.C., we also appreciate and wish to acknowledge the contributions to IAPMO's Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement put forth by ASHRAE members. Their input into this document has definitely made it better."
"I have had a wonderful opportunity throughout my career and through my long relationship with ASHRAE to address the development of high-performance buildings," Holness said. "Today we really see the confluence of energy availability, cost and environmental impact driving change in the way we design, construct and operate buildings. Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. Architects and Engineers, the company where I spent the last 30 plus years really practiced what they preached in terms of ensuring building occupant health, comfort and safety and as a result we were fortunate enough to win many ASHRAE Technology Awards for high performance and energy efficiency. I was privileged to benefit from the strengths of both great organizations."
The HPBCCC is a private sector coalition providing guidance and support to the High-Performance Building Caucus of the U.S. Congress. IAPMO is a proud member of this coalition. The High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus Coalition works with the Congressional Caucus to promote and showcase best practices in building design and focus on issues reflecting all aspects of high-performance buildings including: accessibility, aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, functionality, historic preservation, productivity, safety and security, and sustainability. |
