A message from IAPMO President - Robert Siemsen
Ladies and Gentlemen:
IAPMO has been a member of the World Plumbing Council for more than a decade. As you have read in numerous articles over the years, we feel that the WPC's mission is very closely aligned with IAPMO's in improving health through sound plumbing systems.
IAPMO has supported the WPC in projects such as the development of the publication, "Health Aspects of Plumbing". Together IAPMO and the WPC co-hosted the International Emerging Technology Symposium held in Chicago in 2008, and will co-host the second Symposium on May 11- 12, 2010 in Ontario, California. More recently, IAPMO is helping to promote World Plumbing Day. March 11, 2010 will mark the inaugural celebration of World Plumbing Day and many organizations around the world are celebrating in various ways, including IAPMO. I invite you to learn more about it at www.worldplumbingday.org.
The point of me sharing these activities with you is to ask for your help. The goals of the WPC can only be accomplished with support from its membership. If your chapter joins as an Affiliate Member of the World Plumbing Council, it could help in their efforts to promote the role of plumbing in improving public health worldwide and in safeguarding the environment. To join, simply download and complete the application(PDF).
Thank you for your consideration,
Robert Siemsen
IAPMO President

News for Chapters
A great way to offer Continuing Education to your chapter and attract new members!
IAPMO is introducing a new program for the IAPMO Chapters, the Code Training Co-Sponsorship Program. The program offers your Chapter the opportunity to co-sponsor with IAPMO an open-to-the-industry seminar. Such an event would be a great fundraising opportunity as well as a benefit for your current and prospective chapter members.
The chapter selects the seminar topic and recommends the ideal training date and location!
If your Chapter is interested in participating in this revenue sharing program, please contact Maria Sol Alba at (708)995-3005 or by email sol.alba@iapmo.org.

World Plumbing Day — March 11
The IAPMO Group has planned a number of events/promotions to recognize and publicize the first-ever World Plumbing Day, established on March 11 each year by the World Plumbing Council (WPC) as a means of promoting the plumbing industry's vital work on behalf of the planet and its people.
This annual event aims to help the general public better understand how the plumbing industry protects the public's health and safety, to demonstrate the extent to which it helps limit mankind's environmental footprint and to illuminate other important work performed by contractors, inspectors, installers, engineers, manufacturers and academicians that is often taken for granted.
The IAPMO Group is an enthusiastic supporter of World Plumbing Day and will promote awareness of its celebration through a number of efforts, including Elementary School Educational Activity Contest, One-Day Only Product Certification Discounts and Lapel Pins and Hard Hat Stickers.
"The IAPMO Group pledges our full support to the World Plumbing Council in helping cement March 11 as a day of international celebration of our industry and its countless merits," said GP Russ Chaney, Executive Director of The IAPMO Group.

IAPMO Releases First-Ever Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement
The Sustainable Building Industry today has a powerful and revolutionary new tool at its disposal with the formal release of IAPMO's Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement, the most comprehensive document ever created to standardize sustainable residential and commercial plumbing and mechanical standards.
The Green Supplement serves as a complement to any adopted plumbing and mechanical code, smoothly bridging the previously troublesome gap between existing codes and established green building programs. Where code language and green building concepts lack cohesion, the Green Supplement creates harmony by addressing such areas as:
- Use of alternate water sources (gray water, rainwater harvesting)
- Proper use of high-efficiency plumbing products
- Conservation of hot water
- Energy conservation in HVAC systems
- Training/education in green plumbing systems
For more information about the Green Supplement and/or IAPMO's commitment to a sustainable environment, please direct your Web browser to www.iapmo.org/Pages/IAPMO_Green.aspx or contact Maria Bazan at
(708) 995-3000 or maria.bazan@iapmo.org.

IAPMO Seeks Kauffman, Kneidinger Award Nominees
IAPMO is calling for nominations for the George Kauffman Lifetime Achievement Award and the newly-renamed Joseph Kneidinger Green Contractor of the Year Award, both to be presented to the recipients at IAPMO's 81st Annual Education and Business Conference, Sept. 26-30, in Seattle, Wash.
The Kauffman Award, named for the former 43-year IAPMO member and industry trailblazer nicknamed "Mr. Code," who passed away in 2001, is IAPMO's highest honor, presented to those who have left an indelible mark upon the association and the plumbing and mechanical industries.
The Kneidinger Green Contractor Award, given for the first time last year, honors the IAPMO member contractor who best fulfills or symbolizes a commitment to environmental sustainability through his or her work in the plumbing and mechanical industries. It has been renamed this year in honor of Joseph Kneidinger, an IAPMO member and passionate Green advocate who passed away last September. Kneidinger was a senior plumbing inspector for the City of Portland, Ore., who dedicated his professional and personal life to the advancement of sustainable and renewable principles.
The IAPMO Board of Directors voted at its recent meeting to rename the award because its recipient each year would embody the commitment to which Kneidinger was so dedicated.
Nominations for each will be accepted until May 15, after which the Board will select qualified recipients at its summer meeting. The Kneidinger Award is given out every year, while the Kauffman Award is given only when the Board deems a nominee truly worthy. Kneidinger Award nominations should be presented to the Board through the Committee for Awareness and Understanding of a Sustainable Environment (C.A.U.S.E.), the Green Technical Committee or the Board itself. Kauffman Awards nominations should be made directly to the Board.
The Kneidinger Award and Kauffman Award, if a recipient is selected, will be given in addition to IAPMO's other long-standing annual honors, the Industry Person of the Year, Government Person of the Year and American Flag awards.
While it is tradition to surprise the winners of the Government and Industry Persons of the Year and American Flag awards at conference, the winner of the Joseph Kneidinger Green Contractor award is notified in advance to ensure he or she is present to accept the honor.
Recipients of these awards will be featured in IAPMO's publications, including Official magazine, IAPMOnline.com and the electronic Green Newsletter and I-Connection.

IAPMO Scholarship Essay Competition:
"How Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Can Help Save the World"
IAPMO, striving to make our planet a safer and healthier place in which to live, will award scholarships to five young people affiliated with IAPMO and many of its industry partners as prizes in its first-ever essay competition.
The theme for the contest, established by the IAPMO Board of Directors, is "How Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Can Help Save the World." In light of IAPMO's ambitious outreach programs and work in India, Africa, South America and China, this topic reflects the global implications of the plumbing and mechanical trade and its response to a changing environment.
These scholarships are open to members — and their children — of IAPMO, PHCC, MCAA, the UA and ASSE who are currently enrolled in a high school, community college, trade school, four-year accredited college or university or working in an apprentice program.
Submitted essays must be completely original and a minimum of 1,000 words. The essay entry deadline is June 1, 2010, via e-mail, fax or mail to IAPMO World Headquarters. The winning essay will be announced next September at the 2010 IAPMO Education and Business Conference in Seattle. The essay awarded first prize will be published in the award-winning Official magazine and on the IAPMO Website and its author will receive a $500 scholarship and a one-year paid membership to IAPMO. Second place winner will receive a $250 scholarship and three third place winners will each receive a $100 scholarship. All winning essays will also be published in Official, IAPMO's membership magazine, and on the IAPMO Website.
Individuals who meet the qualifications to submit an essay to the competition should include your name, your school's name and yours or your parent's professional affiliation with one of the qualifying trade associations or union locals. All essays should be sent to Ms. Gabriella Davis at IAPMO by e-mail at
gaby.davis@iapmo.org; by fax at (909) 472-4222; or by standard mail to her attention at IAPMO, 5001 E. Philadelphia, Ontario, CA 91761.
