From Member Services
It's been a while since the last Chapter newsletter was sent out. I hope you and your family are having a nice summer. There has been a lot of exciting things going on at IAPMO.
IAPMO's 82nd Annual Education & Business Conference is just around the corner and will be held September 25-29, 2011 at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio in San Antonio, Texas. I look forward to seeing you there.
The 7th Annual Chapter Leadership Summit and Luncheon will be held in San Antonio at Conference on Wednesday September 28, 2011 in the Corte Real Section ABC. Invitations will be mailed out in mid-late August.
The Chapter Leadership Summit is an opportunity for our Chapter Leaders to get together to discuss success stories, and to review issues that affect the Chapters. I plan on having a panel that represents the country from East to West, as issues are not the same in all areas. If you're interested in participating on the panel, please let me know.
The Chapter National Membership contest is in full swing. As of July 15, Louisiana, Iowa and California Central are the leaders, with California Southern P/M close behind. The contest goes thru August 31, and FREE Conference registrations are on the line.
For a limited time, a free one-year Introductory Membership is available. No hidden costs, no tricks. This membership (category) is open to any individual, governmental unit or organization (defined in IAPMO Bylaws) that is not currently a member. Introductory membership is limited to one (1) consecutive twelve (12) month period, within any five (5) calendar years. Introductory members are entitled to participate in all affairs of the association as a non-voting member and receive all services provided to members in electronic format. Introductory members may convert at any time during the introduction period to any other membership category for which they qualify upon payment of dues for that category.
Experience the benefits of IAPMO membership with absolutely no strings attached. This is an excellent opportunity to have more people involved with IAPMO, especially those that are experiencing difficult times due to the economy. Let's get these people signed up by simply completing the membership application and become an Introductory Member. They can mail it, fax it or sign up at www.iapmomembership.org. They'll have the opportunity to participate and be informed without any additional cost.
Milestone pins have been created and are being mailed to our members, upon their membership renewal, celebrating membership anniversaries, starting with 5 years. Our Life and Honorary members have also received their own unique pin. The feedback from the members has been extremely positive.
Our Chapter webpage has been redesigned at www.iapmomembership.org/chapters. All of our Chapter leaders are now listed. Previous meeting notices and minutes can be viewed (if you submit them to us), in addition to the Next Scheduled meeting, and Previous meeting. Pictures can also be uploaded. All of us at IAPMO look forward to hearing your feedback.
A member benefit that is available to everyone is the IAPMO Job Bank, which can be found at www.IAPMO.org. You will have the ability to look for jobs, as well as the opportunity to fill positions.
Please feel free to send me your ideas on how this newsletter can be enhanced as a resource for you. I can be reached at Alan.Wald@iapmo.org or call me at (909) 472-4211.
Thank you,
Alan Wald
IAPMO Director of Membership

Reinstatement of Tax-Exempt Status for Small Organizations
Small organizations which receive notice of the revocation of their tax-exempt status may be able to restore their tax exemption without any substantial monetary penalties. Small organizations which have lost their exempt status for failure to file the required Form 990-N e-Postcard for their 2007, 2008 and 2009 tax years (or any 3 subsequent years) may qualify for retroactive reinstatement of their tax-exempt status with a reduced $100 filing fee. To qualify, an organization must not have been required to file annual information returns before 2007 and must have annual gross receipts that annually averaged $25,000 or less for its 2007, 2008 and 2009 tax years.
In order to qualify for retroactive reinstatement, an organization must submit a new and properly completed application for recognition of tax exempt status (using Form 1023 for Section 501(c)(3) organizations or Form 1024 for other organizations) with a statement that it qualifies for retroactive reinstatement under IRS Notice 2011-43. The reinstatement application must be filed with the IRS within 15 months of the notice of revocation (September 8, 2012 for organizations on the initial list), but not later than December 31, 2012
Reminder to File Annual Tax and Information Returns
In order to avoid losing tax-exempt status, it is important that tax-exempt organizations (except for certain religious, governmental and political organizations) file a federal tax return (Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-PF) or notice annually. Beginning with the 2010 tax year (filed in 2011), tax-exempt organizations with average annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less must file the Form 990-N e-Postcard electronic notice with the IRS. In general, public charities and other tax-exempt organizations, as well as Section 527 political organizations and non-exempt charitable trusts, are required to file Form 990 annually. However, after 2010, these organizations will be permitted to file Form 990-EZ if gross receipts are less than $200,000 and total assets are less than $500,000. Private foundations and certain non-exempt charitable trusts are required to file a Form 990-PF annually, regardless of their size.
