A message from IAPMO President - Robert Siemsen
It is my great pleasure as president of this esteemed organization to once again invite and welcome you to IAPMO's 81st Annual Education and Business Conference in Seattle, Washington, September 26 — 30, 2010. Your attendance is not only a tremendous opportunity to learn and network with your industry peers and fellow IAPMO members, but provides you with a voice and a vote in reshaping the Uniform Codes for the benefit of millions of Americans.
And what opportunity attendees will have in that regard! At the Assembly Consideration Session scheduled for this year's conference, IAPMO members will vote on arguably the most substantive changes to the Uniform Codes since the ANSI-accredited code development process began in 2001. If you care deeply or have a stake in the advancement of the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code — and frankly who doesn't? — these are meetings you do not want to miss.
In addition to the important business of code development, this year's conference, of course, offers more top-notch educational opportunities, led by the best instructors our industry has to offer — IAPMO instructors. From code review seminars to enlightening presentations and discussions on the most pressing issues of the day, opportunities to advance your understanding of our industry abound.
IAPMO lost a valuable champion of sustainable building practices last year with the far-too-early passing of Joseph Kneidinger, a senior plumbing inspector for the City of Portland, Oregon, who dedicated his professional and personal life to the advancement of sustainable and renewable principles. To honor Joseph and ensure his legacy, IAPMO has renamed our annual award honoring the contractor who most embodies the advancement of sustainable practices the Joseph Kneidinger Green Contractor of the Year Award. This honor will be bestowed upon a deserving recipient along with our other annual awards at this year's conference.
Please join us as we work to advance the Uniform Codes into a new decade of safe, healthy plumbing and mechanical systems for all!
Sincerely
Robert Siemsen
IAPMO President

News for Chapters
Assembly Consideration Session - Code Debate
On Tuesday, September 28, 2010 during IAPMO's Annual Conference in Seattle, the Assembly Consideration Session will take place. It is at this session that each of you will have the opportunity to voice your opinion on proposed changes to the 2012 editions of the UPC and UMC. In late April, the Technical Committees voted on more than 400 proposed changes to the codes. The results of their ballots will be published in the Report on Proposals (ROP) which will be available in August. Members of IAPMO and code change proponents will receive the ROP in either print or CD-ROM format. Those of you who wish to voice your opposition or support to any of the committee's actions should do so at the Assembly Consideration Session. It is at this session where the assembly as a whole will develop an official comment for the Technical Committee's review at their next meeting in the Spring of 2011. Come and be heard!

Emerging Technology Symposium - May 11-12
This two-day event, held at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA, provided participants with an opportunity to view presentations and engage in timely discussions on how the water utility, manufacturing, engineering, and trade industries have found solutions through emerging technologies in the water efficiency, plumbing and mechanical industries.
This event was a follow-up to the overwhelmingly successful inaugural Emerging Technology Symposium that was held in Chicago in August 2008 and was designed to provide a portal for IAPMO's partners to display and demonstrate their innovative solutions to water and efficiency related needs and regulatory developments.
This highly interactive program ran the gamut from broad consumer-based programs such as the US EPA's WaterSense® labeling system to specific new products and innovative cost-saving testing methods.
An impressive list of speakers and topics, included:
- James Hanlon, Director, US EPA Office of Wastewater Management
- Prof. John Swaffield, Heriot-Watt University, on "Trap Seal Protection," non-invasive detection of defects
- Dr. Markus Lenger, Hydrologix Systems, LLC, on "Insitu Bioremediation for Grease Interceptors"
- Max Weiss, Consultant, J.R. Smith Co., on "FOG as a Resource," harvesting FOG for green energy
- Gary Klein, Affiliated International Management, LLC, on high efficiency hot water delivery systems
- Christine DeJong, ASTM International, on developing standards advancing energy and water efficiency
- John Koeller, Koeller & Company, and Bill Gauley, Veritec Consulting, Inc., on the five most innovative new water savings products available in 2010
- Amir Tabakh, LADWP, on "Water Conservation and Technical Innovation through an Ordinance"

IAPMO Releases First-Ever Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement
The Sustainable Building Industry today has a powerful and revolutionary new tool at its disposal with the formal release of IAPMO's Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement, the most comprehensive document ever created to standardize sustainable residential and commercial plumbing and mechanical standards.
The Green Supplement serves as a complement to any adopted plumbing and mechanical code, smoothly bridging the previously troublesome gap between existing codes and established green building programs. Where code language and green building concepts lack cohesion, the Green Supplement creates harmony by addressing such areas as:
- Use of alternate water sources (gray water, rainwater harvesting)
- Proper use of high-efficiency plumbing products
- Conservation of hot water
- Energy conservation in HVAC systems
- Training/education in green plumbing systems
For more information about the Green Supplement and/or IAPMO's commitment to a sustainable environment, please direct your Web browser to http://www.iapmo.org/Pages/IAPMO_Green.aspx or contact Maria Bazan at (708) 995-3000 or maria.bazan@iapmo.org.

IAPMO Significantly Upgrades Career Center Website
IAPMO recognizes many employers in this economy are more focused on retaining employees than adding new ones, but when openings do become available they want to attract the absolute best candidates. In response to this necessity, IAPMO is re-launching a significantly upgraded interactive job board, the Career Center, with new features benefiting both job seekers and potential employers. This newly-enhanced Career Center will smoothly facilitate the introduction of perfectly-qualified applicants with the employers who seek them. It launches on July 1st.
IAPMO's Career Center is the premier electronic recruitment resource for plumbing and mechanical code administrators, bringing exceptional candidates together with municipalities and agencies in need of their talents. Registered employers can post jobs instantly and search the resumes of all registered candidates, who can likewise post their resumes and search for jobs by discipline, geography or keyword. Both members and non-members can use the Career Center to reach qualified candidates or seek a job.
Among the brand new features enhancing an already successful employment site are:
FOR EMPLOYERS SEEKING NEW HIRES:
- Automatic notification when a posted resume matches a particular job criteria
- Links to facebook, LinkedIn and other social networking sites to extend reach to thousands more candidates
- "Featured" employers receive additional exposure to candidates visiting the Career Center
- Streamlined application process
- Increased pool of job seekers due to site enhancements on their behalf
FOR JOB SEEKERS:
- Audio Advantage: Job seekers can create a brief audio clip to introduce themselves and highlight their relevant skills and accomplishments.
- Hoover's Job Seeker Reports: Provides job seekers with pertinent information on more than 24 million companies spanning 400 industries in order to better prepare for interviews and craft cover letters/resumes.
- Career Self Management Program: Career fitness tools to help candidates develop a self-empowering philosophy to enhance their marketability and performance. Includes a personal locker, planning and status system, professional networking tool and resume builder.
To celebrate the improved Career Center, employers posting a job listing now through August 31 will receive a 25 percent discount by using the promo code: Summer2010.
