Are Your Chapter Bylaws Current?
With all of the chores facing Chapter leaders on a daily basis, updating the chapter bylaws is not likely to be at the top of the list. And if the chapter is running smoothly, it is easy to take the approach that it's best to leave them alone. But it may be worth a few moments on the Board agenda to determine if any changes are required and how to go about making them.
The bylaws are the "rules" by which any association operates and ensures both the functioning of the association as a legal entity as well as a means to accomplish the mission of that association. But as volunteers' resources get scarce, it is not unusual for the bylaws to be "set aside" over time in the continuing effort to get things done. And, often, this is the prerogative of the chapter Board to do this. Over time, however, the actions and activities of the chapter could become pretty far afield from what the original founders intended.
So, the purpose of visiting the bylaws occasionally for currency is twofold:
First, to determine if, in fact, the Board has been running the chapter in a "legal" manner. Although there are probably few or no consequences to straying from the letter of the bylaws, this will be a good "checkup" for the Board.
Second, reviewing the bylaws will give the opportunity for the current Board – which probably had nothing to do with drafting the bylaws – to officially change the direction, functioning or mission of the chapter and share those changes with the membership.
Again, it's just one more thing to do, but you might be surprised at what you'll learn in the process.

From Member Services Staff
Back in March, we launched this new eNewsletter in an effort to increase our communication with IAPMO chapters. Specifically, we wanted to bring relevant news items — some having appeared in other IAPMO periodicals — to our chapter leaders and members who may not be IAPMO members. More importantly, we wanted to do this without making this periodical an infomercial for IAPMO products, but rather a resource for chapter leaders. We hope we hit the mark with that first issue and welcome your comments and ideas for future issues.
And remember to share this newsletter with your members either by email distribution or printed copy.

News for Chapters
Chapter Leader Summit to be Held at Conference
On Sept. 30, the Annual Chapter Leader Summit will be held at the IAPMO Annual Conference in San Diego. The Summit will take place during a luncheon for those chapter leaders who are attending the conference. This year, the theme is "Chapter Challenges," where participants will be asked to share with the group their solutions to the challenges of chapter leadership.
Chapter Chairs were sent invitations in the mail back in July. If you have not responded, it's not too late, as we can accommodate as many chapter leaders as can attend. If you did not receive an invitation, contact Johnni Brown at (909) 472-4109 or johnni.brown@iapmo.org.

Chapter Member Cards Template Available
In the past, IAPMO made available to its Chapters membership cards that could be distributed within the Chapter. With the number of IAPMO Chapters growing dramatically in recent years it has become difficult to meet the demand for these. As an alternative, staff has prepared Word templates that can be used with Avery #8371 business card stock to quickly and easily prepare membership cards for your members.
To have these templates emailed to you, contact Johnni Brown at johnni.brown@iapmo.org.

Get Discounts on Codes/Support Products
Want to provide a valuable service to your members and improve your treasury at the same time? Consider IAPMO's quantity discount program to purchase codes and code support products. When you place a single invoice order in the name of your Chapter you get a discount starting at 5 percent off of Member pricing on orders of more than 10 copies of a single item. That's a 25 percent discount – or more – off of List price. You can then re-sell those publications to your members, either passing along the savings or selling them at a higher price to add to your treasury.
For quantity orders, contact Customer Service at (800) 85-IAPMO.

Another Chapter Fund-Raising Idea
Did you know that IAPMO has a program designed especially for IAPMO Chapters? The Code Training Co-Sponsorship Program offers your Chapter the opportunity to co-sponsor an open-to-the-industry seminar with IAPMO. Such an event would be a great fundraising opportunity, as well as a benefit for your current and prospective chapter members.
The chapter selects the seminar topic, the ideal training date and the location! IAPMO provides the instructor and the training materials. And the chapter receives a portion of the proceeds.
If your Chapter is interested in participating in this revenue sharing program, please contact Maria Sol Alba at (708)995-3005 or by email sol.alba@iapmo.org.

2009 Uniform Codes SUPPORT PRODUCTS Now Available
The 2009 editions of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) were published earlier this year, completing a three-year consensus development cycle.
Beginning in August, several important support documents for these codes became available.
The 2009 Uniform Plumbing Code Illustrated Training Manual (ITM) has been published and is now in stock. This new, improved edition of the ITM contains features not available in earlier editions. For example, this ITM contains the full text of the 2009 Uniform Plumbing Code. And most sections contain updated narrative explaining the purpose of that section, inspection tips or consequences of non-compliance.
Also available this month is the 2009 Uniform Plumbing Code Cumulative Analysis book. This important resource identifies every difference between the 2006 and 2009 editions of the UPC and includes an analysis of each change based on submittals and testimony during the Technical Committee meetings that produced the 2009 edition.
Finally, the ITM and the Cumulative Analysis for the 2009 Uniform Mechanical Code will be available in October.
