From Member Services
Greetings from Member Services Staff
Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Chapter e-Newsletter.
Since joining the staff of IAPMO exactly 2 years ago it has been a goal of mine to improve upon the communications we have with our Chapters and, as importantly, their members. And so, in December I wrote to all of our Chapter Leaders to advise them about this new publication. In that letter I talked about my vision of someday being able to direct this e-newsletter to all of their members because, you see, many (in fact, probably most) Chapter members are not members of IAPMO. And that's a shame. Because IAPMO has a lot of information to share with everyone in the plumbing and mechanical industries even if they don't use the Uniform Codes.
So, you are receiving this e-Newsletter because you are, or have been, a Leader in a IAPMO Chapter. Now, going forward you can help us "get the word out" by sharing with us the email addresses of your members. I'm sure that this publication can be as beneficial to you and your chapter as we hope it will be to IAPMO. Send those addresses in any format to me and I will ensure that those members receive future editions.
If you don't wish to share your Chapter email list with us we understand. In that case we ask you to direct your members to the "Chapter" pages of the IAPMO website where they can view this at their leisure.
We have tried here to include information that, while available in other IAPMO publications, may not have been available to all of your members. If, as time goes by, you would like to see specific information or articles on specific subjects don't hesitate to send those thoughts directly to me at Terry.Leppellere@IAPMO.org.
This will be the first of three e-Newsletters to be distributed this year. We hope you find it informative and useful.
Terry Leppellere
Director, Member Services

Chapter Member Cards Templates Now Available
In the past IAPMO made available to its Chapters membership cards that could be distributed within the Chapter. With the number of IAPMO Chapters growing dramatically in recent years it has become difficult to meet the demand for these. As an alternative, staff has prepared Word templates that can be used with Avery #8371 business card stock to quickly and easily prepare membership cards for your members.
To have these templates emailed to you contact Johnni Brown at Johnni.Brown@IAPMO.org.

Important Information for IAPMO Chapters
Leading an association chapter is challenging work. There are the management and financial aspects, leadership challenges, and succession planning chores. And, then, there are the IRS requirements.
IAPMO Chapters are independent entities, not owned or operated by IAPMO and, therefore, are responsible for meeting all IRS requirements on an annual basis. There are more than a few things to consider in this area, such as:
- Securing a tax exempt status
- Obtaining an Employer Identification Number for filing purposes
- Annual reporting requirements depending on revenues
These issues are addressed in some detail on the IAPMO Chapter website. If you are not familiar with the answers to these, go to http://www.iapmo.org/Pages/ChaptersInfo.aspx

Newly Chartered IAPMO Chapter
The IAPMO Board of Directors approved Pittsburg, KS as a new member chapter on Feb. 2, 2009. Originating with 35 members, the chapter becomes the fifth representing the Sunflower State.
Pittsburg is located in Crawford County, in Southeast Kansas. It lies 90 miles west of Springfield, Missouri, and 137 miles northeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma. With a population of around 20,000, it is the most populous city in Southeastern Kansas.
The chapter will make fulfilling the state's requirement of six hours of CEU's each year more accessible to plumbers. Pittsburgh uses the 2003 UPC, Crawford County the 2006 UPC.
At the chapter's first meeting, the 2009 officers were elected: Chairperson, Paul Keys; Vice Chair, Rich Rhuems; and Secretary/ Treasurer, Bob Gilmore.
For more information about the Pittsburg or any other IAPMO chapters, contact Johnni Brown at (909) 472-4109, or johnni.brown@iapmo.org, or visit http://www.iapmo.org/Pages/ChaptersInfo.aspx.

2009 Uniform Codes Now Available
The 2009 editions of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) have been published and are now available, completing a three-year consensus development cycle.
The Uniform Codes are developed using the American National Standard Institute's consensus development procedures. This process brings together volunteers representing a variety of viewpoints and interests to achieve consensus on plumbing and mechanical practices.
The codes are designed to provide consumers with safe and sanitary plumbing and mechanical systems while, at the same time, allowing latitude for innovation and new technologies. The public at large is encouraged and invited to participate in IAPMO's open consensus code development process. A code development timeline and other relevant information are available at IAPMO's Website, www.iapmo.org.
To purchase your copies contact Customer Service at 800-85-IAPMO.

When you place a single invoice order in the name of your Chapter you get a discount starting at 5% off of Member pricing on orders over 10 copies of a single item. That's a 25% discount – or more – off of List price. You can then re-sell those publications to your members and either pass along the savings or sell them at a higher price to add to your chapter treasury.

Perkins, Swords Replace Retired Raimer in IAPMO Field Services
Dwight Perkins has been named Director of Field Operations and Don Swords as Region 8 Field Manager for IAPMO, filling the two positions held by former Director of Field Services Linden Raimer who retired in December.
Perkins will continue to serve as Field Manager of Region 1, comprised of the six western most United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, a post he's held since Jan. 1, 2002. As Director of Field Operations, Perkins will orchestrate the code adoption efforts of 11 other IAPMO Field Service regions.
"I look forward to continuing to implement the various projects Linden has worked so hard to develop and to create new initiatives that will provide The IAPMO Group with a winning strategy among Authorities Having Jurisdiction," Perkins said. "With the 2009 editions of the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code available in March, the field managers and I will be working aggressively to promote these progressive codes and gain their adoption throughout the country by ensuring a smooth transition from earlier editions or other codes."
Swords has been involved in the plumbing/mechanical industry for 38 years, most recently concluding five consecutive terms as Plumbers' Business Agent for United Association Local Union 72 in Atlanta. He is Chairman of the Construction Industry Licensing Board (Plumbing Division) for the State of Georgia, to which he was appointed by Gov. Zell Miller in 1998 and named Chairman in 2006.
As Field Manager of Region 8, Swords will represent IAPMO's interests in seven southeastern states: Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
